Advancements in fire safety for the cannabis industry: codes, equipment, and processes to prevent them from going up in smoke.
The cannabis market in the United States topped $6 billion in 2017 and is project to double by 2021. Currently, there are approximately 28,000 businesses in the industry, including many that utilize processes previously unheard of in any form of agriculture. In the meantime, many code consultants and authorities having jurisdiction are struggling to determine the real threats to occupants and buildings. Most can quote anecdotal evidence found online or seen on newscasts, but are unsure of which codes to enforce in order to mitigate the potential threats to occupants, building owners, or the general public.
This presentation explores new technologies that have been developed in the past few years as the industry has risen exponentially. Growers have developed techniques that rival many high-piled storage facilities. Manufacturers are using laboratory grade enclosures and equipment in production facilities that rival large pharmaceutical companies. Now that the cannabis market is here to stay, it is imperative to first understand the various (and creative) production and manufacturing processes. Only then can a fire protection engineer begin to determine how to best mitigate risk from fire and explosion.
Presenter: Ronnie Thomas, PE Associate, Reax Engineering
