Prescriptive vs. Performance-Based Protection With Sprinklers - What is the Real Value? Lessons from Full Scale Fire Testing
Leonard (Len) Ramo, Telgian Engineering and Consulting
Hayward Fire Department
777 B Street, Hayward, CA 94541
(right across the street from Hayward BART)
We usually think that solid shelves, blocked flues, aisle storage, lighting obstructions and K5.6 sprinklers are all bad? Well, maybe not. This presentation will explore lessons learned through full scale fire testing directly related to solving real work problems. We will review large-scale fire testing programs and methods that have been conducted in general accordance with NFPA 13, Chapter 24…Alternative Sprinkler System Designs as well as review the development of sound test programs, testing options, commodity classification, sprinkler technologies and discuss interesting results. This presentation will encourage ideas related to solving your own situations where prescriptive answers are not always the best option.
Len is a graduate of Binghamton University (NY) with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He has 25 years of fire protection and loss prevention experience.
